Passion for Social Impact

The importance of social impact cannot be overstated. It represents the profound effect individuals, organizations, and businesses can have on society, addressing critical issues and fostering positive changes. Social impact goes beyond mere philanthropy; it embodies a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of people and the health of communities and environments.

At its core, social impact is about creating sustainable solutions to societal problems. It involves understanding the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental factors and developing strategies that address these areas holistically. In today's globalized world, where actions in one part of the globe can have ripple effects elsewhere, prioritizing social impact is not only ethical but necessary for the well-being of our interconnected societies.

Engaging in social impact work also helps in building more equitable and inclusive communities. It challenges the status quo, addresses systemic inequalities, and empowers marginalized groups, contributing to a more just society. In essence, the pursuit of social impact is a pursuit of a better, more sustainable, and equitable world for all.

Vietbodia Study Abroad

My capstone experience in Vietnam and Cambodia, part of Florida International University's Global Learning Medallion program, stands as a defining moment in my educational journey. This interdisciplinary service-research program not only deepened my understanding of Southeast Asian culture and history but also provided me with a firsthand perspective on the significant historical events that shaped the region and their ongoing impact on current global relations.

During the program, I traveled from the bustling streets of Hanoi to the dynamic cityscape of Ho Chi Minh City, immersing myself in Vietnam's rich history and culture. I explored the historical context of the US-Vietnam War, gaining insights into its profound influence on both nations' foreign policies and their present-day relationships. This exploration wasn't just about understanding the past; it was about connecting historical events to current global dynamics, thereby enriching my perspective on international relations.

The journey then led me to Cambodia, a country with a history as complex as its magnificent temples. Here, I engaged in service-research projects, working alongside local school students and teachers-in-training. This experience was not just about teaching or learning; it was about cultural exchange and building bridges of understanding. I helped educate future teachers in Cambodia in the English language at the Provincial Teacher Training College, which was both challenging and immensely rewarding. This task required me to not only impart knowledge but also to be receptive to the rich cultural heritage and learning styles of the Cambodian people.

One of the most awe-inspiring parts of the trip was visiting the historic temples of Angkor Wat. Walking through these ancient structures, I contemplated the artistry and the centuries of history they represented. This experience underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage and provided me with a deeper appreciation for the arts in the context of global history.

Throughout my journey, I encountered various challenges that tested my adaptability and problem-solving skills. From navigating the local transportation systems to communicating across language barriers, each hurdle I overcame contributed to my personal growth. I learned to be flexible and resourceful, skills that are invaluable in our increasingly globalized world.

Reflecting on my time in Vietnam and Cambodia, I recognize how this experience has profoundly shaped my global perspective. It has instilled in me a deep respect for cultural diversity and an understanding of the complexities of global issues. As I move forward in my professional journey, these insights and experiences will guide me in making meaningful contributions to global society.

This capstone experience was more than just an academic requirement; it was a transformative journey that has left an indelible mark on my worldview. As I continue to strive towards a career in law, with a particular interest in immigration, the lessons learned and the perspectives gained from Vietnam and Cambodia will be invaluable in understanding and addressing the challenges faced by individuals in a global context.
